Debut: Spencer Cole – You Exist Right Now

Posted on April 28th, by digits in Debut

spencer

Wonderfully smooth and dangerously sunny soft pop from Toronto newcomer Spencer Cole. Clearly starting out the gate with a very refined and accomplished sound. Exciting things await no doubt. We’ve selected the synth-heaviest jams for you, but you should really check out the whole You Exist Right Now EP on Bandcamp. Released by Thom Gill and Colin Fisher’s new label Love Nation!

horseThe Squids – OJ

Raff McMahan of Faux Fur has a side project! Here’s The Squids, and this first single is a lengthy post-punk anthem that can stand among the best in the genre. Seriously wow. PWYW for their debut EP Frankie J over at Bandcamp.

wicked

Ooooh very excited to find out about the existence of this band – Un is from Montreal, are perhaps a little influenced by the classic French duo Deux, and here’s a dark synthpop gem from you to sample. “Wicked Child” is from the cleverly named UN titled Album, released in February, which you stream/purchase on Bandcamp.

Debut: Unseen World – Golden Energy

Here’s a brand new project from Lindsay Dobbin, previously known for making experimental field recording folk as Broken Deer in Whitehorse. Her new project is called Unseen World and these first three tracks are hot off the presses. Very exciting experimental electronic pop ranging from the bombastic Doldrums-ish explosions of “Golden Energy” to the beautiful droney delay of “What You Want.” Favourite new Halifax artist!

“Golden Energy” and “Night Horse” are both going to be on a VHS split with Halifax’s Organ Magic coming out this summer. Can’t wait!

Debut: The Number Line – EP 01

numberline
We’re cheating a bit here calling this a debut. The Number Line is a rebranded Piper Davis, with whom we have a long and storied history. Simply put, the EP is amazing, one of the best we’ve heard all year. A solid, near-perfect pop output. S.N.P.P.O.

Amazing new stuff here from Brandon Hocura of Polyphasic Studios, who has produced a couple of our favorites including Sexy Merlin and Cellphone.  The project is called Seance Centre and is a collaboration with his wife Naomi.  Really excellent, slickly produced electronic music.  In moments surprisingly reminiscent of the Knife.  Check it out.

CelesteAria – Keep Me

Don’t know much about CelesteAria – well nothing really, except that she’s from Astral Space, Canada – but this is one of the loveliest dark ambient pop tracks we’ve heard in a while.

Here’s some couldn’t-be-more-evil downtempo electronic pop from Fevrs, half of whom hail from Rochester. Very promising new band.

Violence – Façades

We’re adoring fans of the Montreal label Visage Musique, and it’s not often that they add a new act to their roster. So we’re super stoked about this latest signing: Violence, pronounced the French way. They’re from Ottawa and their debut 12″ EP will be released in February. This first track is perfectly composed dark and sexy minimal synth music, and we can’t wait to hear the rest.
