Site contributor Digits has a new EP out today, which we will neutrally refer to as “audio content for the listening inclined”. Stream it here or buy it on his website. Or watch that video he did on The Fader.

New Release: Pants & Tie – Women’s Complaints

Pants & Tie – Heavier
Pants & Tie – Bones of the Kid

Finally, a new album from Pants & Tie! I mean sure, we’ve had Young Truck to tide us over, but it’s been far too long since their first album, released back in 2006. Their frantic post-punk sound has become even more danceable, with four-on-the-floor beats present in album highlights “Drawing on My Affection” and “Good Morning Mr. Pickton”. But my favourite two tracks are the mid-tempo pop hits: “Heavier” in its grooving funk possession and “Bones of the Kid” which sounds like an alternate-universe Constantines making a Prince song. Listen to and buy the album on Bandcamp.

cloudface-totalCloudface – Devonian Garden

Vancouver collective/label Moodhut is prepping it’s first ever 12″ from synthesizer wizard Cloudface. Both sides of this release buzz with minimal analog goodness. From the structured opening cut Devonian Garden to the chill/freak-out vibes of Summer on the b-side.

New Release: Mozart’s Sister – Hello

Posted on February 19th, by digits in New Release

Mozart

It’s here: the long awaited proper debut EP from Montreal dark pop genius Mozart’s Sister. All of these tracks were out there before on the Dear Fear EP last year, but these reworked versions sound huger and even more amazing. She’s been getting hyped in all the right places. And just today in the UK on Dazed. The world’s next outré pop superstar? We couldn’t be happier about it.

EDIT: Silent Shout is now presenting Mozart’s Sister live in Toronto on March 23 at Canadian Music Week. We’re now officially biased in our unabashed love of her music.

New Release: Data Romance – Other

Posted on February 19th, by bonnaventure in New Release

caves

Victoria’s Data Romance drop their debut album Other. The duo has developed a more refined sound from last year’s self-titled EP. The album features epic soundscapes mashed against nu-trap productions and delicate vocal performances that range from child-like to haunting and everywhere in between.

There are obvious thematic lines to be drawn between a release like Other and output from similar Canadian acts like Purity Ring. That being said, this is anything but a rehash of what’s already popular. Data Romance may not be dropping jaws in quite the same way as Purity Ring did when they hit the scene, but Other is an excellent release from a very talented duo.

New Release: Me and my Rhythm Box – Teaspoons and Tablesalts

Me and My Rhythmbox – Male Models
Me and My Rhythmbox – Maltese Budgie

Well, this is just a good fun band from Toronto. Me and my Rhythm Box make jangly electro-post punk. Sort of like Modest Mouse if they had synths and drum machines and didn’t suck for at least 10 years. Thank you for filling that void that my 17 year-old Lonesome Crowded West obsessed self was longing for all these years.

The four song EP is available for PWYC download at their Bandcamp.

Pretty Pretty Records are home to a bunch of our recent favorites, and they’re really throwing another one on the heap with this debut EP from Tarantula X.  Super slick EBM-tinged instrumentals, gorgeously balanced compositions, big beats.  1998 and Ashes are definite highlights.  The EP is available here.

Doldrums – Giant In The Sky (Sean Nicholas Savage cover)
Majical Cloudz – Kisses Like A Girl (Sean Nicholas Savage cover)
Mozart’s Sister – Standing In A Line (Sean Nicholas Savage cover)

Everyone in the Canadian music community is aware of Sean Nicholas Savage‘s reputation as an incredible songwriter. He’s released ten-odd albums, each of which contains countless treasures, so it’s no surprise to see such luminaries as Doldrums, Majical Cloudz, Mac DeMarco, Pat Jordache, and so many more covering his tunes on this brand new compilation, available for free from Arbutus Records. Sean is set to release an important full-length in 2013, one that he’s been working on for over a year (a long time for him).

Silent Shout is presenting Sean’s performance at Double Double Land in Toronto on Feb 15, with performances from AGOR of Blue Hawaii and Sexy Merlin, and Cadence Weapon and Doldrums DJing.

This post also appeared on Berlin’s No Fear of Pop.
