SolarSolar – Secrets and Orchids

SolarSolar – Closer to the Sun

SolarSolar, an electronic dream pop duo from Waterloo, recently put out their first recording, an EP called Secrets and Orchids. The opening track “Closer to the Sun” is my favourite of the bunch, featuring hushed vocals that pop in and out of a mix in very interesting fashion, all over a atmospheric background of subdued electronics. But the whole EP is solid and definitely worth hearing – the beautifully eerie “Left to Right” and electro-R&B number “It Should Begin” are also standouts. Have a listen to it on their Bandcamp and download it on a pay-what-you-want basis.

Austra – Beat and the Pulse

Toronto electro-rockstar Katie Stelmanis announced via Twitter that her eponymous days are behind her, revealing her new band Austra to the world. Upon further research (checking her myspace), it seems that she is not just messing with us and has even posted an excellent new song from the project. Check it out and be mesmerized!

Friday Classic Dark: Skinny Puppy

Alright, we understand that a lot of Skinny Puppy is hard to swallow. Once you look past the stupid vocals, stupid live show, and stupid lyrics (“Bubonic plague, the truth of AIDS immunity, avoid decay”), there are some amazing synth lines and killer drum production. We won’t link to the video, because that just expounds the taking-this-way-too-seriously vibe, but listen to that arpeggio in the chorus and try to tell us that you aren’t moved to dance a little bit. And hey, they’re Canadian (despite the obviously fake British accent). It’s also perfect for this Halloween weekend.
